We're back with another fine episode of Board To Death. This one is for the lovers of extreme
metal, featuring Spencer Hazard, guitarist for Full of Hell. Spencer's relaxed, friendly
demeanor belies the power of the Maryland band's combination of grind, death metal, sludge,
hardcore, and raw noise captured on their 2021 album "Garden of Burning Apparitions"
on Relapse Records. Shot while the band wasn't able to tour, Spencer was experimenting with his pedalboard butsaid that one of his board's permanent residents is the EQD Dispatch Master reverb and delay.
"I think it might be my favorite pedal ever made. If I lost all my pedals, I think I could do a
show with just the Dispatch Master," Spencer said.
Besides his trusty Dispatch Master, his other EQD related stompboxes include the Death By
Audio/EQD collaborative delay pedal Time Shadows. Spencer uses the EQD circuit to get a
"low-octave blown-out sound,"
and the Full of Hell Weeping Chaos fuzz delay from Abominable Electronics, which Spencer
helped design. Spencer also uses a DBA Speed Tripper for more layers of noise and delay.
Continuing his desire for maximum...everything, Spencer adds more noisy fuzz and just
straight-up noise pedals; the Generator 3 from Dead Air Studios, the Doom Messiah from
Colossus and Zvex's Machine, and a DBA's Fuzz War to go with his Boss CE20 chorus multi-
effect pedal for that "classic 80s chorus sound he loves. Ironically, there's also a Boss NS-2
noise suppressor, which Spencer is quick to note he only uses in venues with spotty electric
wiring.
When it comes to using his pedals in the studio, Spencer likes to write first and then go back
and pick which pedals he'll use on a song-by-song basis. Check out Full of Hell's "Garden of Burning Apparitions" and then see if they'll be coming to wreck your town in 2022.
