Welcome back to ProGuitarShop and ToneReport.com. Today we're exploring the Gold Star from Keeley Electronics. The Gold Star takes its name from Spector's Wall of Sound and Gold Star Studios, birthplace of several iconic records throughout history. The Gold Star is a reverb pedal first and foremost, with three separate modes for your mixing pleasure—Compressed, Distorted and Flanged. With some careful tweaking, each mode can yield tones that sound like you spent days locked in a studio. The Vinyl and Depth controls changes their functions depending on the mode. In Compressed mode, the Vinyl knob controls compression ratio, while Depth controls threshold. In Distorted mode, Vinyl adds or subtracts distortion from the reverb trails and Depth controls pre-delay, which is perfect for rockabilly slapback. The Vinyl knob is dual-mode in Flanged mode: turn it left of center for flange tones and right of center for warped vibrato sounds. Best of all, the response of the Gold Star is tuned such that it actually responds like the vintage RCA mics and Ampex tape machines that populated Gold Star Studios in its heyday. Each Gold Star Reverb is hand-made in sun-kissed Oklahoma, USA, using the best components in the cosmos.
