This month, I'd like to illustrate a very clear and effective way to memorize the series of scales that are collectively known as the seven fundamental modes. I consider these modes to be essential learning for any aspiring metal soloist. The majority of them are also equally useful for soloing in other styles, such as blues, rock, jazz and country.
When I think about the modes, the first guitarist that comes to mind is Randy Rhoads, because he put a spotlight on the modes within the context of metal guitar. In this lesson, I'll demonstrate an easy-to-understand system for learning and memorizing the modes all over the fretboard. Once you have a firm handle on the modes, I'll show you how chords and chord progressions can be built from each mode.
