Released in 2005, the T5 was Taylor's first 'electric' guitar, a grand auditorium-sized hollow thinline with a braced spruce top, three pickups selected by a five-way switch and tuned via active treble and bass EQs. Only one of those pickups, a narrow stacked humbucker by the bridge, was visible. Another humbucker was buried in the neck joint and the third, more acoustic-sounding, transducer was under the soundboard below the bridge.
The T5 was extremely successful, and led the company into production of the more ES-335-like semi-hollow T3, and the now- suspended SolidBody electric range. New for 2014, the T5z offers the same functionality but with a downsized body and a more electric-like feel and setup. "I saw the original T5 as an invitation for the acoustic guitarist to play in the electric world. It had a similar feel and setup: it was an acoustic player's electric guitar," says Taylor's Andy Powers. "With the T5z, we wanted to approach it from an electric player's perspective and give them an invitation to play with acoustic sounds."
Here, Guitarist editor Jamie Dickson gives the T5z a workout.
