Academy Of Tone #68: The incredible story of Leo Fender and his inventions PLUS Trev Wilkinson interview!
On this week’s Academy Of Tone, Thomas and Rich dive into the past to examine the lives of one of the most important figures in the history of rock and roll musical instruments: Leo Fender.
Fender, who was born on August 10 1909 – 112 years ago yesterday, to be precise – created a series of groundbreaking electric guitar, bass and amplifier designs that became the foundation for modern pop and rock music. And his designs have stood the test of time, because his iconic products are still being built in the same way as they were back when he designed them, giving us further proof of the man’s genius!
Alongside the history of the man himself, Thomas and Rich will also show off some of Fender’s most iconic guitar, bass and amp designs, from Thomas’s ’61 Strat, a ’64 Strat and a ’56 maple Strat to a ’53 Telecaster, a late 60s Precision Bass and a Jazz Bass, as well as amps like the Princeton, Bassman and Twin.
In the last part of the show, we also have a great interview with the one and only Trev Wilkinson, who lived in Los Angeles for many years and was a personal acquaintance of Leo, as well as doing business with Fender – who used the Wilkinson Roller Nut on a number of guitar models starting in the 1980s. Trev will share some of his stories and explain why he thinks Fender designs are among some of the best to ever be created – and why they may never be beaten.
Leo Fender had a long and busy life, of course, and Thomas and Rich will talk about as much of it as they can. Here are some of the topics we’ll go into:
- Fender’s beginnings as Fender Radio Service in 1938, where Leo repaired radios, phonographs, home audio amplifiers, public address systems and musical instrument amplifiers.
- Leo’s early 1940s move into producing musical instruments and amplifiers of his own design together with Clayton Orr “Doc” Kauffman under the K & F Manufacturing Corp banner. Eventually, Kauffmann left the company, and Leo renamed it the Fender Electric Instrument Company in 1946.
- The early 1950s and success with early Fender models like the Broadcaster, Esquire, Telecaster, Stratocaster and Precision Bass.
- The release of the offset (and radically different) Jazzmaster model in 1959, followed by the Jaguar in 1962.
- Leo’s 1965 sale of his company to Columbia Broadcasting System (CBS) for $13 million, and the changes this brought about to the many instruments in the Fender stable.
- The formation of Leo’s next companies, Music Man (1975) and G&L (1979), and the instruments produced by these companies.
- Squier, and its position as Fender’s cheaper little brother brand.
