Fantastic Negrito first arrived on our radar in 2015 when he won NPR’s Tiny Desk Concert Contest with his song “Lost in a Crowd,” beating out nearly 7000 other submissions with his fresh approach to roots music.
The project of Oakland, California musician Xavier Dphrepaulezz, Fantastic Negrito has had a massive year since its Tiny Desk win — opening for Chris Cornell on his European and upcoming North American tour, guest-starring on Fox’s hit show Empire, and writing a full-length album, Last Days Of Oakland, which comes out June 3 on his label Blackball Universe.
