Wait, you say, how can you get a Vox Top Boost overdrive tone with a tube run at low voltage? Vox ingeniously used two different signal paths. The first is a servo circuit that finesses the conditions between the plate and the grid of the tube for stable operating conditions at low voltages. The second is a low-voltage, low current power supply for the heater element in the tube. This provides a couple of things, great tone and stability at low voltage and longer battery life. The operating current of the Over the Top Boost is just 95ma. That's low enough to give you up to 18 hours of operation on the 4 AA batteries.
