Tim Lerch Jazz Solo Guitar Lesson - How To Play - Part 2 of 3 - Guitar Licks Jazz Lines - Guitar Instruction and Breakdown
We're really excited to breakdown some cool jazzy lines in this solo played by Tim Lerch. I've been following Tim Lerch for several years now and he is one very gifted player. Unlike a lot of really good guitar players ... besides being a "players player" (by this I mean a guitar player that is impressive to other guitar players) ... he is a true musician ... much more then someone who has studied for years and has come to master his instrument. He puts music and melody before licks and technique.
Don't get me wrong, the thing that peaked my intrest when I first heard him play was his technique and tone ... and an amazing touch and feel for the guitar. But it was his subtle bends, picking style and perfectly placed phrases that kept me coming back for more.
Tim was fortunate enough to study at Musicians Institute during it's heyday when guys like Don Mock, Steve Travato, Ron Eschete, Les Wise, Howard Roberts, Tommy Tedesco, Joe Diorio, Joe Pass, Kieth Wyatt, Pat Hicks, Pat Martino and the late great Ted Greene were teaching there.
After hours of absorbing information in classes with Joe Diorio, Joe Pass and Ron Eschete at GIT, he would then often drive down the street to take private lessons at Ted Greene's apartment. Talk about learning from the best.
All you have to do is check out his playing and you will hopefully agree that so much of what was taught to him has rubbed off and made Tim Lerch a very refined player.
On a side note ... If you are not familiar with Ted Greene go to this link

and then I'll see ya back here in a few months. There is so much great information and videos to watch. It was a great loss when Ted passed in 2005 ... he was a very special guitar player, musician and person. He is on my list of top 10 favorite guitar players. I've been studying his material for 20 years now and I continue to learn new stuff every time I go back and open one of his books.
If you buy only 4 books in your exploration for guitar knowledge ... make them Ted Greene's :
Jazz Guitar : Single Note Soloing - Vol 1
Jazz Guitar : Single Note Soloing - Vol 2
Chord Chemistry
Modern Chord Progressions
And if you decide to buy a 5 book or DVD to learn from check out our offerings over at www.guitarBreakdown.com (we will soon have some cool offerings in the form of instructional DVD's, books and other teaching goodness). Yes, I know ... shameful plug. :)
... Now Back to this lesson
You can hear Mr. Tim Lerch for yourself here

In this three part guitar lesson we will breakdown his solo for his Jazzy Happy New Year 2010 video. It's a really catchy, smooth and straight forward jazz improve with an old school feel to it - all played along with a familiar melody. He makes great use of motifs and call and response phrasing. He also adds in some subtle chromatic movement from time to time which you'll be able to incorporate into your own playing immediately, as these lines sound great but are not overly complicated. As stated above, Tim does a great job of always serving the song - constantly thinking about melody and the underlying chords and chordal movement - as opposed to trying to throw in licks or "cool" chromatic lines".
To hear Tim's version of this solo ... go to:

The part of the solo we will breakdown in this guitar lesson begins at around 0:17 ... and goes until about 0:47.
We hope you get a lot out of this lesson. I think there are a lot of great ideas and concepts that you can begin to incorporate into your own guitar improvisation. We will be doing several more lesson in months to come on Tim Lerch stuff. And after having the good fortune of speaking with him ... we are looking forward to hopefully having him share some guitar magic on some future videos here on guitarBreakdown.com.
On another side note, you will notice I am playing a new guitar. It is an Ibanez Artcore AF125. I've only had it for a short time but for the price it is a great feeling and playing jazz box. We will be doing a series of guitar tech lessons with a really great guitar tech named Greg Back ... and we will be starting with this guitar. So we hope you stick around for that.
We hope you enjoy this lesson ...
