This lick is based on what came to be known as "the boogaloo beat," which rose to popularity in the mid 1960s thanks to artists such as Otis Redding, Sam & Dave and Booker T. & the M.G.'s.
Basically, I'm just combining a bass pattern with chords. The bass pattern is fairly typical and is repeated throughout; I add a little harmony to it on the first and last beat by playing thirds. Then I add a full C7 chord on the second beat to fill it out.
The key to making this lick groove, however, is in keeping your strumming hand loose and really feeling the rhythm. You want to play the accents on each downbeat, as well as the fret-hand-muted dead notes on each third beat, as percussively as possible.
The tempo is 100 beats per minute, 80 for slow practice.
