Here we have a pedal from a local pedal builder who goes by the name of Kuato Design. This one is a well known combo of the univibe and fuzz. It is a 2-in-1 with an added Octave on/off footswitch. The fuzz is a very unique and original design by RobA down at Rock-it Frog (this guy is a genius of pedal design) and the Uni-vibe is the Madbean Harbinger build project. The switching is done via relay boards and momentary button-like switches. The relay switching has been developed by Thomas down at TH Custom (http://diy.thcustom.com/) and utilizes the mute feature which eliminates that switching pop forever.
The fuzz in this combo is unlike anything we've heard before, it's actually a differential distortion/fuzz which sounds very interesting and unique and in comparison to let's say a Muff actually has fantastic volume knob clean-up. The octave sounds from it are incredibly tight and this is the first octave fuzz that we've tried that really allows you to chug it as you would normally do with a high-gain distortion pedal for dem crushing riffz!
This sound example that's before you starts off gently, with the often overlooked vibrato mode on the Uni-vibe. We feel that this is pretty much unexplored or at the very least underutilized territory and would encourage you all to pursue this sound as it really can get really classy and rich, while less cheesy than either a chorus pedal or a flanger.
The second example shows the octave fuzz in it's full glory. After some riffing, we step on the uni-vibe in the chorus mode and adjust the speed by foot. The oversized knob really does a good job at this. The builder takes particular pride in having a knob called Behemoth on his pedal (it is truly called like that at the retailer's site!). The order toggle on the pedal was set to the fuzzvibe sound meaning that the vibe here had been after the fuzz the entire time. It is of course possible to have it the other way around as well.
This is a pedal made with no compromises in mind, and will last a lifetime. Enjoy this gem by Kuato Design stompboxes. Keep riffin'!
