Last month, Andy Aledort discussed the virtues of aiming to emulate the sound of the human voice when playing single-note lines and detailed a variety of ways to do so, with and without a slide. Those distinct qualities heard in the way vocal melodies are often articulated, such as the use of vibrato and glissandos — “gliding” between pitches — serve to deepen the emotional impact of the musical performance.
