Learn one of the most iconic intro riffs of all time! In this week's PMT College lesson, Leigh Fuge of MusicTeacher.com shows us how to play the opening riff to the classic track 'Enter Sandman' by Metallica.
The opening track on one of the biggest selling metal albums of all time, Enter Sandman is based around an iconic riff written by lead guitarist Kirk Hammett. In this lesson, we'll be learning to play the clean version of the riff, played by James Hetfield at the beginning of the song.
Enter Sandman is one of those riffs that every guitar player will learn at some stage. It’s a great
introduction to string skipping and it has the additional challenge of leaving notes ring as you move to other notes.
The riff itself is considered to be a relatively easy riffs which makes it an ideal riff to learn for newer guitar players. However, as with everything we learn, easy is a subjective word. This riff, as simple as it might be considered, still has a few challengers.
The riff is made up of just a few notes. The fluid sound of the riff comes from the notes all ringing into each other, coupled with a clean tone with some chorus laid on top, the riffs notes should feel like they’re all blending together.
