In the mid-1960s, the British guitarist Derek Bailey wandered off the well-worn musical path to pursue a musical life in free improvisation. A couple of generations later, a young cohort of improvisers, indebted to Bailey in their nonstandard musical thinking, continues to draw new sounds from the guitar.
