Peerless has produced some three million guitars over the past 40 years, primarily for other brands. Up until quite recently, Peerless's guitars reflected this, with few original designs. However, that's begun to change, with the release of two Martin Taylor models and now this Retromatic.
"It was important to create a design that could cross many genres and be visually appealing," says Peerless's Graham Essen, who worked closely with Sean Genockey (ex-Moke guitarist and currently in-demand resident producer) and Matt Gleeson at Monty's Guitars London. "We thrashed out every aspect of the prototypes shipped over from Korea in various studios including our own," adds Graham.
Slightly smaller in width and length (381 by 470mm/15 by 18.5 inches) compared with a 335, it's a bigger proposition than a Les Paul, but quite compact compared with Peerless's jazzier archtops and Gibson/Grestch-alike semis and thinlines.
We put the Retromatic through its paces in this demo using a Healey Sapphire amp throughout. Pick up a copy of Guitarist issue 376, on sale now, for the full review.
