How to easily create your perfect Stratocaster. Part Six: How to seal off water based dye. I show you how its done and what I used; it's critical when you're going to top coat the guitar parts.
What you will learn:
Is this process simple?
Can I get it wrong?
Why seal the parts?
Do I need anything else?
Are there different sealers?
What is a sealer?
Will we have to sand it?

After using water based dyes to color parts I bought from Warmoth I knew that without sealing the dye that there would be problems later when I used a top coat. This video is all about applying the sealer so that you get great results later.
While it is easy to assume this step in a guitar build might not matter, in fact it is one of the most important steps of the whole process and getting the sealing right is important. Avoiding sealing will without question cause trouble later. Great preparation of the guitar body and neck yields a great final result. Some bodies or necks require two coats of this sealer depending on the woods used.
I carried out some research and decided to buy some Rustin's shellac sanding sealer to give it's proper name. Among other things this sealer can seal water based wood dyes to prevent them 'bleeding' when applying a top coat later in the guitar building process. It took me a while to find this sealer, but because it is shellac based it stops all reactions from what is being sealed, in this case water based dye.
When you apply the sealer, for the first time you will get some idea about the guitar parts and how they might look when you apply the top coats to complete the guitar.
This whole series of videos will show you EXACTLY how to create a Fender Stratocaster (with licensed parts) right through to the final guitar over a series of videos. I have a very specific design of this guitar. Although it 'looks' like a regular Strat, in fact it uses a number of guitar parts probably never created in this exact way and included as I have.
Part seven will show the Warmoth neck and body being finished with either nitrocellulose or acrylic gloss or matt whichever I decide on later, but the processes of applying those finishes is similar.
Other components used in the series include: Fender Locking Machine Heads, an ABM tremolo unit (separate review), a Fender Clapton boost circuit and its installation, Fender 69 custom shop pickups and one or two other surprises along the way.
This video series is entirely unsponsored and I purchased every single part just as you would have. I sincerely hope that this series of videos can inspire you too to have a go at creating a guitar what ever type it might be. I have spent considerable time creating these video series at my expense:
