"Most of the time the song tells me where it wants to go, and the structure works itself out from there. This was not necessarily one of those pieces. It was an interesting puzzle to work through. The intro came first, which built in to the rhythmic bass line and the melody followed. Those ideas vectored into build-ups and come-downs, and with the uncommon time signature taking it's place in the foundation, I was allowed to have some free form transitions between parts. Once I worked out the rhythm of the harmonic melody and bass line in the chorus, I just had to let the song finish telling it's story.
The main theme of 'Higher Ground' is about rising above any problems one may encounter and finding a way to blur the line between our present view and future hindsight, creating a sort of higher perspective to approach current issues from. By doing so, we can reduce the number of regrets we may have in the future by making more educated and calculated decisions in the present."
