James' pick today is a bit off the wall but very unique and cool! Today we've got a 1957 National Valco Avalon Model 1134. This Valco made National is unique vintage instrument with an incredible vibe! Good condition with average play wear and all original. “D” and “G” tuner posts are a little bent, but function normally. Plays well and features a full rounded 50’s neck profile. The oversized single-coil pickups have a wide range of tones with a fat, bassy neck pickup and a snarling, twangy bridge pickup - with the ability to blend between them as desired rather than your traditional three or five-way pickup selector. Lots of mid-range bite and a tone somewhat reminiscent of P-90’s. A cool instrument that exemplifies funky vintage tone! For amplification, we grabbed a fun little Vox Pacemaker from 1965, a lightweight 17-watt combo with classic Vox tone and added tremolo!
