Joe Bonamassa Not My Mother Gigatory Solo - Guitar Lesson - Part 3 of 4 - Guitar Breakdown - Guitar instruction and Breakdown.
In this lesson we will breakdown another great guitar solo by Joe Bonamassa. For myself, watching this video about five years ago for the first time ... was my face melting introduction to Joe Bonamassa. I wasn't sure if this was a completely improvised solo or not but either way, I recall watching this video over and over.
There is a simplicity to what mr. Bonamassa plays in this solo regarding the note choices mixed with a load of typical blues phrases. However, the way he meticulously constructs and builds this solo is near perfection. He creates a guitar solo that gently guides the listeners ear through 24 bars of blues bliss. Joe weaves phrases together with his amazing touch and usual great guitar tone.
Besides just learning this solo, I would suggest spending some time really trying to understand each phrase and how one leads into the next. Of course the chromatic type lick stands out and is probably what most people will immediately focus on (it's definitely one of the things that drew me to this solo) ... but I think the thing that defines this as such an awesome guitar solo to me is the way it gradually builds in pitch, intensity and complexity. And that is actually why towards the end of the solo, that chromatic type lick pops out and works so very well.
When you play a bunch of sixteenth note licks all the time, or you play a bunch of chromatic ideas all over the place ... no matter how cool, it wears the listeners ear out and it begins to become boring ... everything just starts to sound the same. But like Joe Bonamassa does in this solo ... he plays melodic, vocal type ideas and lets the solo breath ... then he softly punches you in the face with a straight sixteenth note semi chromatic type lick.
Now that's someone who truly understands how to construct a captivating solo.
Well, at least that's my opinion.
To hear the great Joe Bonamassa play this solo for himself, just go to this link:

The solo begins around 0:25 seconds in.
Aslo check out the Gigatory Channel for a bunch more Joe Bonamassa videos. They all seem to be from the same recording session. It's been several years since there was any activity on this channel ... however there's still plenty of good stuff to check out.

If you are new to Joe Bonamassa and like this style of playing I would suggest maybe also checking out some Robben Ford, Allen Hinds, Larry Carlton, Guthrie Govan, Gary Moore, Eric Clapton, BB King and John Mayer to name just a few.
And if you want your mind to explode just take in some Derek Trucks ... this guy is the real deal. His phrasing and tone has been praised by all the great guitar players out there. He is Mr. Blues.
Ok ... hope you enjoy this lesson and continue to check out our videos. We have a lot of fun things planned for the future, hope you stick around ...
