http://www.guitarBreakdown.com/ - We are super excited to be bringing you this Guitar Lesson based on a Solo from Shane Theriot. Shane is such an amazing Guitar Player and Musician and beyond that he is a really great guy that I'm proud to call a friend.
Shane was one of my Guitar Teachers at The Atlanta Institute of Music (AIM) ... and he was the first guitar player I saw that had a sound and style that was so intriguing and inspiring and sounded nothing like anything I had heard before. After months of studying with him ... I later came to learn that a big part of his sound that I was mystified by was his masterful way of combining Jazz Licks and Phrases with standard Pentatonic and Blues ideas.
There of course was somewhat more to it then that ... but that was the essence of what grabbed my ear and peaked my interest. Add to the Jazz and Blues Phrasing ... Shane also combined Rock and Country ideas into the mix ... basically nothing was off limits ... everything was ripe to throw into his stew of ideas.
And like all inspiring guitar players ... his endless search for great Tone was always at the forefront of his playing.
A lot of Shane's diversity obviously stemmed from his prior education at Musicians Institute (GIT). He studied with such Legendary Guitar Instructors as Scott Henderson, Allen Hinds, Steve Travato, Jimmy Herring, Paul Gilbert and Dan Gilbert ... to name just a few. His exposure to all styes of music from Rock to Jazz to Blues and Country was obviously deeply ingrained in every fiber of his being ... and is prevalent in everything he plays.
Like most Guitarists back in the 80's and early 90's ... Shane enjoyed stealing Licks from guys like Van Halen, Steve Vai, George Lynch, Jeff Beck and Warren DeMartini. And while most of us were content with learning ideas from those guys and all the other popular Guitar Players in that Rock genre ... Shane also took ideas from guys like Allan Holdsworth, John Schofield, Mike Stern, Pat Metheny, Wes Montgomery and Larry Carlton ... and then he took it a step further and explored ideas from John Coltrane, Charlie Parker and Michael Brecker.
What comes of learning from such a vast array of influential musicians ... well, just listen to any of Shane's recordings and you'll find out.
It just awesome to hear the way Shane mixes all those styles so slickly into one unique sound.
All the things stated above are only part of the reason why Shane has been in such demand as a Guitar Player and Studio Musician over the past few decades. The other factor that can't be overlooked ... is he's just a really good guy ... fun to hang out with and always up for a laugh ... this makes it an easy decision to hire him for touring gigs and long sessions in a lonely confined studio.
That is why Shane had toured for years with the Neville Brothers, LeAnne Rimes, Willie Nelson and now can be found touring with Hall and Oates. Shane also earlier this year got the coveted gig as Musical Director and Guitarist for the TV show Live From Daryl's House with Daryl Hall.
