Van Halen Sessions - Guitar Lessons - Session 1 - Guitar Breakdown - Guitar instruction and Breakdown.
Welcome to the first video in a series of videos that we are calling "The Sessions". In these lesson we will be breaking down the techniques of many of the best guitar players ever to play. The lessons we do in" The Sessions" category will comprise of short lessons that focus on a specific technique, idea or lick that are prominent in the players style and in some way define their sound.
In the Van Halen Sessions will will be breaking down one of the greatest guitar players of the 70's and 80's.
Eddie Van Halen is known for many amazing aspects of his playing: innovative two handed techniques, grooving riffs, whammy bar madness, incredible tone, etc. But one of the more substantial areas often overlooked is his clever combination of phrasing ideas with the guitar's idiomatic technique. And with a figure as prominent as EVH, we probably shouldn't leave any stone unturned.
In the first of a series of lessons on the elements of Eddie Van Halen's solos style, we explore a repetitive six note fragment found in the first solo from "I'm The One." As with many EVH ideas, there is a lot of bang for your buck. Not only did he manipulate the idea across the spectrum of his own early recordings, there is still room for you to explore its application in your own improvisation. And with this lick's combination of picking and legato, you can work on building your speed as well.
