A true workhorse guitar that's managed to strike up partnerships with the likes of Neil Young, the Beatles and Bob Dylan, among others, the Martin D-28 is about as close as a guitar can come to an industry standard. Initially launched in 1931, the D-28 has a long history, turning itself into a legend through its distinctive, bright tone and playability.
So popular that there were points in the 50's where Martin customers had to wait two years to take one home, Martin have adapted and improved the design over time, maintaining the D-28's position as one of the world's favourite acoustic guitars.
So, we were petty excited when it came to light that Martin had brought out a new model; the D-28 Reimagined. Building on the success of the original, the thinking behind the D-28 Reimagined was to provide a guitar that was loyal to the D-28's history and heritage, yet also very playable and modern.
They've pretty much hit the nail on the head in our opinion, with gorgeous vintage appointments, such as its open gear tuners, an aged toner top and antique white accents, along with a faux tortoise pickguard; Martin have once again produced an undeniably beautiful instrument with absolutely loads of vintage appeal.
However, the Reimagined neck profile has an unmistakably modern feel to it. Rather than seeming out of place, it's a welcome addition which contributes massively to the guitars' playability and comfortable feel. Along with this, the biggest innovation of the latest in the D-28 family is the addition of forward-shifted bracing, allowing greater vibration of the top and resulting in a more played-in than you'd generally expect from these guitars.
What you're left with is a well-balanced, tremendously rich sound with a lot of intricate high-end detail. We were fascinated with some of the gorgeous overtones and harmonics that were coming through and really enjoyed putting the Reimagined D-28through its paces.
We're happy to say that it passed all of our tests with flying colours and we can thoroughly recommend these instruments as a distinctive and worthy take on a classic and all-time favourite of ours!
