The Studio series are Ashdown’s new range of bass combos which have been designed to deliver great tone, versatility and value for money, but most importantly, they’re incredibly lightweight, with even the biggest model in the range weighing just 11 kilograms, so they’re a great option for bassists who are sick of lugging backbreakingly heavy amps to gigs and rehearsals.
Available in 5 different models, all of the amps feature classic styling with silver speaker grill cloths and matching control panels, and the wide variety of sizes, power ratings and features available in the range means that there’s one to suit any budget or requirement that you’ll need from a bass amp.
Starting with the two smallest models in the range, we’ve got the Studio Junior and the Studio 8. The Junior kicks out 15 watts through a custom 8” speaker and features a closed back cabinet design, whilst the Studio 8 is slightly punchier at 30 watts. It utilises the same 8 inch speaker, but due to it’s larger, ported cabinet design, the Studio 8 offers a bit more low end thump when compared to the more compact Junior.
Both amps feature controls for volume, bass, middle and treble offering versatile tone shaping, there’s a headphone and line input for connecting your phone or MP3 player to jam along with, and the Studio 8 also features a line mix control, to adjust the level of the line input. Either of these models would make an ideal bass amp for beginners or for someone needing a great sounding, compact practice amp for home use or low volume rehearsals.
Moving on the other models in the range, we’ve got the Studio 10, 12 and 15, which feature an expanded control panel, and in the case of the two larger amps, a few additions which are aimed at gigging bassists.
The studio 10 is a 50 watt model with a 10 inch speaker, ideal for rehearsals and low volume acoustic gigs, the studio 12 kicks out 100 watts through it’s 12 inch driver so it can easily be used for small gigs with a full band, whilst the largest, most powerful model houses a super lightweight 15” neodymium speaker and an impressive 300 watt power amplifier, so it’ll hold it own against even the loudest guitarists and drummers.
You get a few more controls to tweak your tone including a 5 band EQ, a shape switch and pre gain and drive knobs for if you want to add a bit of grit and distortion. There’s an input attenuator switch to cater for active or passive basses, a line input and headphone output, and on the studio 12 and 15 you also get an effects loop for your external pedals and a DI output so you connect directly into a PA system or for recording.
Finally, it’s important to emphasise again just how light these amps actually are considering their size and power. The cabinets are constructed from super lightweight poplar ply, which is still really strong and sturdy, but it means that the studio 10, 12 and 15 weigh in at only 7, 10 and 11 kilograms respectively.
