IK Multimedia and their TONEX pedal recent release of an amp simulator including IR's, effects and more has created a stir in the simulators market for guitarists and bass players. But really, is the Amp Simulator pedal really a revolutionary device? Does it offer something new that can't be found in other similarly specified equipment, and importantly will it replace your guitar rig for gigging and studio work for good?
There is no doubt that the TONEX pedal and software in the form of TONEX and Amplitube downloads offers much by way of the hardware, software, manuals, and even a two-year warranty, and the specifications of the hardware and software certainly gives high plausibility to the TONEX pedigree. But amp simulators come and go rather rapidly these days.
In this video review firstly I take a look at the TONEX pedal hardware and determine the quality of the unit. Then I discuss many aspects that should be considered by anyone even contemplating buying one of these IK Multimedia devices especially if you're coming from a real guitar or bass tube amplifier and real speakers.
I do show some of the software as downloadable and also some of the experiences I had as a regular user with various problems, as well as the levels of support I received and what I did to resolve the problems.
I have reviewed very many amp simulators ( amp sim units ) over the years and I go back as far as 2011 with Kemper amps when they were first launched, and I discuss my opinion about thew Kemper amp compared to the TONEX pedal unit under review here. You might be surprised how the Kemper Amp Simulator fares even as a 12 year old device.
The manuals have to be downloaded most likely because some of them are extremely large and it might prove difficult to review manuals on something like a cell phone for example.

The software as supplied is to say the least a massive part of this TONEX amp sim simulator and its important not to assume you could use all the software in just an hour or so proficiently. In fact, in my view it might take some time to master.
Towards the end of the review I discuss likes and dislikes and some of the things I really could not get on with, and I then give a fair and reasonable score of the product in its entirety based on my own experiences as a paying customer. But would I buy another TONEX amp sim pedal? Answers in the review.
Lastly, myself and Alan Bruce play through the TONEX amp simulator with a few different settings and different guitars just to give some sort of reference of the tones that were in the unit by default, but we did tweak most of them a little.
