On this week’s Academy Of Tone, Thomas is back in Hamburg at No. 1 Guitar Center, where he’s joined by the iconic German music producer Frank Plasa and our regular guest Nils Finkeisen!
This is another week where Thomas has made the trek to the north of Germany to make videos for No.1’s World of Vintage Guitars YouTube channel, and so on this Academy Of Tone we might get to see a few of them in action as well.
But in this show, we have two very special guest appearances for you to enjoy. Firstly, the Hamburg-based Franz Plasa is one of Germany’s hottest music producers. As the founder and owner of H.O.M.E.-Studios – the largest recording studio complex in Hamburg – Franz first found fame as a guitarist in the German band Felix De Luxe, before turning to production.
He’s known for his incredibly tasty vintage-inspired production sound, which made him a household name after being behind the desk for German stalwarts like Echt and Seelig, earning massive radio play and record sales in the process. On the show, Thomas will try and shed some lights on some of the secrets behind Franz’s success, and the guys will also dive into his guitar playing roots.
Our second guest is Academy Of Tone regular Nils Finkeisen. It’s actually a great time to have Nils back on the show, as he’s just finished his latest tour with his band, German industrial metallers Die Krupps. Nils will share stories from the road, talk about his use of AMP1 Iridium Edition, and he’ll also reprise his role as tester of high gain amps on the show for us, so join us and he and Thomas cruise No. 1’s envious amp department looking for metal monsters to plug into!
Some of the gear Thomas has earmarked to test on the show includes:
- The ENGL Savage 120 amp
- A Diezel VH4
- A 60s Fender Bassman with white tolex (you'll know the model already if you're familiar with Brian Setzer!)
- The Roland RE-201 Space Echo
- A bunch of 60s Fender Thinline Telecasters
- Five late 50s Gretsch guitars (all from 1956-1960)
- A Gibson EDS 6/12-srtring double neck versus a Mosrite copy
- Vintage Strats from 1955, 1964 and 1968
- A Gibson SG Junior in Candy Apple Red
- Uli Jon Roth's personal collection of exclusive Sky Guitars!
As you can see, this has the potential to be an episode full of great chat and extremely exciting gear, so join us, and let us know in the comments which of the guitars from the list above you’d most like to see the guys play on the show!
