On this week’s Academy Of Tone, Thomas is back from tour with a bunch of stories to tell – and a fitting theme for the show: preparing your live rig for the rigors of the road and touring, and what to do when something inevitably goes wrong on stage!
As a live musician with decades of touring experience under his belt, Thomas has seen it all. He’s also learnt all the best tips and tricks when it comes to setting up your gear for live shows, and in this episode, he’ll share his top secrets for making your setup gig proof!
It’s not just about the amp, of course – although he always makes sure his AMP1 settings are optimized for the room before each appearance, that’s normally the quickest thing to get right.
Setup starts for Thomas with his guitar, and that means making sure its set up well, all the electronics and hardware are working, and he has a decent set of strings on it – with spares side stage ready for any breakages. After the guitar, the rest of the rig gets checked: pedalboard and pedals, cables (patch, power, guitar and speaker!), and of course the way the (cabinet/amp) is set up in the room, be it with or without a cab, with or without monitors, etc.
Then it’s time to check the various settings, and Thomas will show how he goes about making sure these are all spot on before showtime. In particular, the stage volume needs to be looked at, and it’s important to make sure all your amp/pedal/guitar settings are the way you need them.
After that, it’s time for the actual concert, and Thomas will describe the things that can go wrong here, and provide his tried and tested solutions. It could be your single coil pickups have too much hum, for example, or you break a string… in fact, pretty much anything that can go wrong WILL go wrong at some point in your touring life, so there’s plenty of stories here!
We also have two videos to share that Thomas shot on the recent tour. The first is a short visit to Lehle, German makers of some of the best switching devices around, and the second is an in-depth walk around Musik Produktiv, one of Germany’s best music stores. Thomas takes you through the store’s great collection of gear, and finally joins Ben Granfelt to check out their amazing custom shop room, where there’s a few exquisite Gibson Custom Shop Les Pauls just begging to be tested!
We’d also love to hear your top gig preparation tips, and your stories of times things have gone wrong on stage for you – and hopefully, what you did to put them right! Join us in the chat and we’ll see who has the craziest story!
