On this week’s Academy Of Tone, Thomas is joined by special guest Manuel Kettenring to discuss the pros and cons of mono and stereo setups, as well as the conundrum: to go direct, or not to go direct?!
There are so many different ways we can set up our guitar rigs these days – from traditional combo amps to amp heads with cabinets. Then there’s pedalboards, and rigs with direct outputs to modelers that feature stereo effects. Over the years, this has meant that many players now ‘go direct’ (that is, run their rig straight into the PA, mixer or recording interface, as opposed to miccing up a guitar cabinet) as standard.
In the analog world, we now have the benefit of devices like Universal Audio’s Ox Box attenuator/load box to do this with traditional tube amps, while more modern leaning amps like AMP1 feature direct outs, and there are additional products like the BluBOX virtual cabinet simulator, and IR (impulse response) loaders like the Two Notes Torpedo or Captor X to further simply things.
On stages across the world, we now see all kinds of combinations of these products: from traditional cabinets (some still micced up!) to amps with load boxes and IR speaker simulations – as well as in-ear monitoring systems, which have resulted in so-called “silent stages” for musicians!
In the digital world of modelers, meanwhile, there’s a load of options, from direct to PA with in-ears to hybrid solutions featuring stereo direct signals alongside a traditional amp/speaker, or FRFR (full range flat response!) cabinets…
So, there’s choices aplenty. But which is best for you? What is the best solution for a touring player, and what works best when you’re playing and recording at home? Well, enter Thomas and Manuel, who are both extremely experienced with all of these setups. The guys will go over all the options, giving useful examples and demonstrating settings each time. Plus, they’ll answer your questions, so if you have something you want to ask, join us in the chat!
This is going to be an exciting – and perhaps not a little controversial – episode, so bring your popcorn too 😉
