We spoke with Kinga from Pushpin Studio, who demonstrated their latest project at Bristronica 2024 - a hackable groovebox designed for performance and sound design flexibility. Kinga shared that this open-source groovebox features synth capabilities through Surge XT, offering eight tracks, each equipped with customizable oscillators, filters, and three insert effects. It runs on a Raspberry Pi 5 and is controlled with an Ableton Push 2.
Kinga mentioned that the project stemmed from their need for complex sound design during techno performances, allowing for unique processing chains per track without compromise. An open-source Overbridge client called Overwitch is implemented, allowing USB individual outs from drum machines like the Rhythm. Though it remains a work in progress, Kinga hopes to release the groovebox soon.
