Dix Bruce Dix Bruce fingerpicks "Railroad Bill" on this 1943 Martin 000-18, one of 27 guitars offered in the Acoustic Guitar Auction that begins May 13, 2021.
A 73 year old instrument with just two loving owners, this Martin 000-18 needs a new home. It was first owned by guitarist Leonardo Monzo, who emigrated at age 18 from Spain, via Cuba, to Monterey, California. He was a regular performer along Cannery Row, made famous in the novel by John Steinbeck. His wife worked in the canneries and gave her husband this new Martin 000-18 in 1943.
After Leonardo Monzo's passing, his daughter asked her physician, Alexander Holmes, an amateur guitarist, whether he would be interested in seeing the instrument. He was startled to open the unprepossessing cardboard case and find this all-original vintage Martin, replete with a blow-horn pitch pipe and an Anacin tin containing Monzo's hard-shaped abalone guitar picks. Dr. Holmes purchased the instrument after an appraisal by Dexter Johnson of Carmel Music and has maintained its excellent condition.
