Dave Friedman has been a recognised authority on all things ‘tone’ for a long time now: he has modded and built amps for players like Bill Kelliher and Jerry Cantrell so he’s been rubbing shoulders with some master players. His own brand of amps really took off in a big way with players who wanted hardwired boutique amplifiers that sound ‘more British than British’: the Friedman amps begin at the fabled ‘Brown’ sound and go from there!

With this in mind, Friedman has branched out into the world of quality electric guitars. He has teamed up with 80s custom-builder legend Grover Jackson to produce a line of tasteful, hot-rodded axes with premium build quality and hardware: the results are staggering.

This brand new design, The Cali (shown here in an awesome Vintage White) is a very distinctive take on an 80s shred type of guitar: with it’s custom-wound double humbucker pickup configuration and tremolo arm, it’s spec’d for some pyrotechnics! There’s some tasteful relic’ing to the Ash body and Birdseye maple neck while the fit & finish is as tight as you’d expect from the man who started the original San Dimas guitar Custom Shop! This thing has ‘pyromaniac gunslinger’ written all over it, and it’s a complete thrill to play! That gorgeous Vintage White paint job is finished in nitrocellulose which not only gives it a lovely aged patina but contributes to the realism of the dents and scratches. The frets have been levelled and finished with a PLEK machine, too.

This guitar features the distinctive two-tone Friedman headstock (with an inverse colour scheme for the logo on this guitar) and has that great Custom Shop played-in feel. As for the sound, the best way to describe it would be like holding on to a lightning rod! It blends tons of high output grit with a degree of finesse: just the perfect place for an expressive and satisfying instrument! This is an extremely playable and reactive hot rod of a guitar that sings with an incredible rock voice.
