Paul Gilbert Mr Big Wind Me Up Solo - Guitar Lesson - Part 1 of 3 - Guitar Breakdown - Guitar instruction and Breakdown.

What else can I say. From Racer X to Mr Big to the Paul Gilbert solo career to the millions of guitar clinics, instructional videos, guitar magazine interviews and lessons ... do we really need another guitar lesson on anything Paul Gilbert !??!!?

I say YES !!! Well, actually ... I say ... SORT OF, MAYBE. What I mean by that is, I think Paul has covered about 80% of his licks and technique and no one can teach that better then the man himself. However there are some things ... some really important aspects of his playing that I have never seen him dive too deeply into.

And that is what this lesson is about. I have never really seen him teach much of his Racer X or Mr Big stuff (solos in particular). And that is what we will focus on in this lesson. I really believe some of Pablo Gilbertos finest guitar playing can be found on the first two Mr Big albums (cd's if you are younger then me). I love his Racer X stuff and his solo playing. But to me ... the Mr. Big era was the beginning of a new direction for Paul. This is when he really began focusing on phrasing and incorporating more bluesy pentatonic stuff into his playing. This can be seen in the transition between his first REH instructional video and his second REH video. Both of which I highly recommend you purchase if you have not already ... they are some of the best instruction videos out there ... in both sheer amount of content and quality of content.

The first video was during his Racer x days which offered a lot of speed alternate picking and sweep arpeggios, while the second video showed his transition to playing more well phrased and rhythmic riffs. The maturity in his playing between that time was amazing.

Again, I love the racer x stuff and it's some of the most enjoyable and challenging stuff to play. But as far as musicality ... I'd say that stuff was more guitar gymnastics. But the Mr Big stuff was more about "the song" while also throwing in great guitar parts.

So enough of that ... If you are a guitar player you probably know most of that because everyone knows who Paul Gilbert is. He is one of the most highly regarded guitar players and guitar instructors out there.

In this lesson we will breakdown one of my favorite Mr Big solos. The solo from Wind Me Up is just so well constructed. It's relatively simple in terms of notes. But his phrasing is great and his note choices to outline the two basic chords that he is playing over is brilliant. This is one of those lessons that you should be able to extract so many little pieces and immediately incorporate them into your own playing ... which really should be the goal when learning stuff like this.

And please take time to appreciate the awesome introduction to the fake f-holes on his guitar and the coolest addition of the fringe on his guitar (Good Lord !!! after I first saw this I wanted fringe on all my guitars) ... and don't forget to take notice of Billy Sheehans incredible back roll technique right at the end of the solo (I have a feeling he doesn't perform many of those anymore).
