Drew Shirley of Switchfoot did a pre-soundcheck hang with PG’s John Bohlinger at Nashville’s historic Ryman Auditorium. Shirley’s straight-ahead approach to gear and music has driven Switchfoot’s sound since 2003.
Drew Shirley tours exclusively with Elliott guitars. His No. 1 is a collaboration with the North Carolina-based company dubbed the Royal Haven. It embodies the classic power of a Les Paul Junior with the look of an Epiphone Coronet. The pickups are Elliott’s own P-90s and Shirley strings the guitar up with a set of Ernie Ball .011s.
The idea behind Shirley’s two-amp setup is that he wants one to have lots of headroom and the other to sound like it could blow up at any minute. The 65Amps London is an 18-watt amp that Shirley uses on tunes that require cleaner tones and offers plenty of headroom while the Revival 8E1 is a 5-watt combo that is always on 10 and on the verge of breaking down (in the best way possible). The London feeds a Revival 2x12 open-back cabinet that houses blue and green Celestion speakers.
