Nashville guitarist and producer Corey Congilio shows us the always pleasing Martin OM-21 Standard.
First things first - the top of this guitar is solid Sitka spruce and the sides and back are solid East Indian rosewood. This is a tried and true tonewood pairing for acoustic guitars that provides balanced projection and nuanced subtlety. What's under the hood of this iconic guitar is just as important as what you can see. Under the top, the solid Sitka spruce braces are arranged in a standard scalloped "X" pattern. This allows the top to vibrate more freely without compromising strength. It has a distinctly more pronounced tonal character than non-scalloped guitars. The dovetail neck joint is crucial to this guitar's sound and stability as well. I love the modified low oval neck with the performing artist taper alongside the 1 3/4" nut width. It provides a comfortable ride but also plenty of room to move around, especially if you're a fingerpicker or the kind of player who really needs to get in between notes.
