Today we’re feasting on the Super Phat Mod from Keeley. Keeley’s humble beginnings lie in expertly modifying existing pedals, and one of his first-ever mods was his Phat Mod on the classic Boss Blues Driver. He tightened the pedal up to make the gain creamier while making several part changes to reduce the noise floor and lift up the tone. The legacy continues with the Super Phat Mod, which progresses the Blues Driver circuit even further, delivering more of everything you expect out of a time-tested Keeley design. The Super Phat Mod’s entire circuit is based around a rare Toshiba-brand JFET that was chosen over hundreds of other devices. This JFET imparts a little extra sparkle, and dare we say “magic” to the Blues Driver legacy, elevating the circuit to one of the truly great drive sounds. The Super Phat Mod contains a switch for a little extra bass response, so Strat and Tele players can use it for brawny, rounded rhythm tones as well as smoky, focused leads with the flick of a switch. The Super Phat Mod is incredibly transparent and articulate, and plays well with your guitar’s volume knob. Rolling the volume knob back lets some air into the circuit, delivering some light texture that players of any genre can use. And like all Keeley products, the Super Phat Mod is built by Keeley’s ensemble of mad scientists right here in the States.
