In Season 2, Episode 9 of “The Process,” you’ll get a behind-the-scenes look at our new spray booth facility in Bozeman, Montana, and be able to learn more about the differences between the four types of nitrocellulose application as part of the finishing process of Gibson Acoustic guitars.
One of the recurring themes throughout our history has been selecting acoustic production techniques that aren’t easy to execute but better serve the instrument. A prime example of this is our use of nitrocellulose lacquer. Over time, nitrocellulose lacquer absorbs and dissipates, allowing the guitar to vibrate and breathe. This gives it the freedom to create the rich tone our acoustics are renowned for, transforming them into heirloom pieces that improve with age.
Watch as we explain what happens to nitrocellulose lacquer on guitars over time and the tonal qualities that shine through after decades of use as they slowly become a family heirloom. Learn which Gibson Acoustic guitars have specific nitrocellulose lacquer application techniques and how they affect the sound, and get an insight into the benefits of nitrocellulose finish on acoustic guitars.
Learn which Gibson Acoustic guitars have nitrocellulose finishes, such as the Gibson G-Collection of acoustic guitars, which receive three coats of lacquer; the Gibson Faded collection with six coats; five of nitrocellulose and one final coat of satin; the Custom Historic Collection receives five coats, resulting in a period correct tonal change, and all Modern and Original guitars receive the full coat gloss finish with seven coats of lacquer. But, most importantly, learn why we apply these coats as we do.
Gibson TV’s award-winning docuseries, “The Process,” is returning for a second season!
This time, we’re taking you behind the scenes for an in-depth look at the physical process of making our acoustic guitars. “The Process” explores our newly expanded acoustic factory in Bozeman, MT, featuring interviews with the talented craftspeople who hand-make these beloved guitars and deep dives into the art of guitar making.
