Guthrie Govan cold winter slow bluesy guitar lesson part 1 of 2
Here's another impressive solo by Guthrie Govan. For most guitar players ... take away the technique and the fast acrobatic licks ... sit them in front of a slow tune ... and you discover their weaknesses rather quickly. What makes a great guitar solo to me ... is great tone ... great phrasing ... great control over each individual note ... playing with purpose ... saying something from beginning to end.
I used to be impressed with all the fast licks and technique. But like most people ... the longer you play, the more you want that emotion/feeling. Now this doesn't mean you have to play slow or only a few notes. There's a time and place for a terrifying lick ... but for me ... that time is not from the beginning of the solo to the end and everywhere in between.
This is a perfect example letting the rhythm and chords guide the solo. There are no flashy licks. Just great tone and great phrasing with subtle accents from one mature player.
