Recently I was approached by Cherub Technology and asked to review the NUX NGS-6 amplifier simulator pedal. I accepted because their comments included 'good or bad - put it in the review'. So the pedal arrived - and that is interesting because the UA Dream 65 and the Ruby 63 amp sim pedals were fresh in my mind and I was excited to take a look. I was also surprised when researching other brands that the Strymon Iridium only really had THREE amp simulations (it seems) and both the UA and Strymon offerings cost approximately double the price of this NGS-6 amp simulator pedal. So is the NUX NGS-6 Verdugo pedal from the Amp Academy series for guitar a winner? and is it simply better value than the UA and/or Strymon products?
I looked inside this unit and the quality was frankly pretty much as good as it gets and I was reminded about the UA pedals that I recently reviewed which was also incredibly good. Quality is a critical component when you want longevity and a robust design and this pedal has buckets of that!
Don't look for other reviews like this one as I show this pedal - there are none and likely never will be... and make no mistake if I found something that is in any way detrimental then its in this review for potential customers to see - I used a 'no holds barred' approach and I always teel it as I find it.
My concerns of course, after looking closely at the pedal physically, related to the amp simulations and tones themselves and just how easy or complex this NUX NGS-6 amp sim really would be to use in real life situations like at a gig for example. I used the pedal in the studio myself and directly in to the desk and we had no problems at all in doing so.
In the audio examples section of the review we played a sample of the 6 main amps (set by default - but you can change them for others) and while I did use the software editor to change a few positions those sounds were right out of the unit and only changes were things like the drive, master, the bass, mid and treble and that sort of thing so it was really being used like a 'real' tube amp. So check that section out and the accompanying notes about the gear and more...
So while this was a gifted pedal I show it all in all its glory and good and bad is included without ANY input from the maker. That is so important to my reviews that had there been 'strings attached' then this review would not exist.
I have spent considerable time (near enough a week!) creating this video and this video is not sponsored other than the donated pedal. My views remain entirely my views and I was not given ANY context to write the review. It's my own work and is a completely truthful independent review - so check it out and don't just watch the sales videos from others!
