Sharon Isbin has been hailed as the reigning diva of the classical guitar and the preeminent guitarist of our time. She is the winner of Guitar Player magazine's Best Classical Guitarist award, and she was also the first guitarist ever to win the prestigious Munich Competition. An NYC resident, Isbin is the director of the guitar department at The Julliard School and is the first and only guitar instructor in the famed music school's 100-year history. Isbin has been acclaimed for expanding the guitar repertoire with some of the finest new classical compositions of the century. She has also crossed genre lines to perform and record with other great guitarists such as Steve Vai, Stanley Jordan and Michael Hedges. Isbin spoke to Guitar Shop TV about how she began her classical guitar studies in Italy at age nine. She also talks about her passion for Latin music and the mentors who influenced her, including the legendary Andres Segovia.
