We were honored to welcome Roland Product Specialist Scott Tibbs into the Sam Ash Spotlight to talk about Roland's new VP-03 Vocoder. Part of the Roland Boutique series launched on September 9th 2016, also known as 909 day, the VP03 was inspired by the legendary VP-330 Vocoder plus which was originally introduced by Roland in 1979. Check out Scott review and demo some amazing features of the VP-03.
Like the rest of the Boutique Series(TB303, TR909)these faithful recreations of Roland's iconic production products are made possible through Roland's Analog Circuit Behavior Technology. To help give you a better idea of the full capabilities of the TB303, Scott explains the controller by breaking it down into 3 main sections. 1st is the traditional Vocoder which is ready to use right out of the box thanks to the included Goose Neck Microphone on board the VP-03. Next comes the Synth Voice section which has both male and female options. Finally, there is a string section. All the sections can be modifying on the fly using different effects.
Next, Scott briefly discusses the two new and unique features on the VP-03, the 16 Chord Memory Function and the Voice Step Sequencer, before putting the VP-03 to the test with some captivating demos.
First, Scott uses the Vocoder Section showing us an important feature which is the ability to blend the Vocoder with your actual voice. This is great for confident singers looking to bring a signature authenticity to the VP-03 performance. He also reviews the on board effects including Rate , Depth, and Delay. These effects allow you to add lifelike Vibrato to the Vocoder just like a traditional vocalist would do on stage. Another great effects is the Ensemble feature which provides a Chorus Effect.
Next, Scott shows us the Synthesized/Human voice section. There are options for Male and Female Voices which can be combined and mixed. Next, Scott reviews the String section, showing that all 3 sections can be blended together for virtually unlimited tonal possibilities.
Scott Concludes the overview with a demo of the new Sequencer and Chord Memory Functions. When using the sequencer you can adjust samples on the fly using the effects control which is great for live performance. The Chord Memory function allows you to play full sounds and multiple notes with 1 finger.
