In the back half of the 19th century, the blues genre would emerge from the American Deep South. By the dawn of the 1900s, it evolved into what we might recognize more easily today. The distinctive mix of bass lines, instrumental arrangements, lyrical subjects, and blues-scale composition became the ubiquitous foundation from which jazz, soul, and rock ’n’ roll would develop. As the 20th century continued, advances in sound technologies meant that the increasing versatility and accessibility to recording, playing, broadcasting, and owning music would fuel further musical development and experimentation. Classic rock would appear by the 1960s, giving way to successively heavier reinterpretations of the sound before the inevitable arrival of metal. It’s impossible to overstate the significance of the blues scale in classic-rock and metal tunes, but Sweetwater’s metal maestro, Nick Bowcott, is taking you a sonic odyssey in this three-part miniseries to show you the essential blues-scale riffs every rocker should have in their repertoire. This is part one, and it goes over three must-know metal licks. Check it out!
