The phantom-powered preamp protects ribbon mics from potential phantom power voltages, but also delivers the gain ribbon mics need. It also works with dynamic and condenser mics, while offering variable impedance for matching - or sometimes, mis-matching - mics to obtain multiple sounds from a single mic.
