For as long as I've been playing guitar, I've felt completely dependent on gain and sustain to be able to solo well. The thought of having to try and play a convincing solo with a more subdued tone gives me nightmares. So how do some players do it? How do they play solos that sound perfectly suited for a tone that's less gainy and sustainy? In this video I'll show you three demonstrations, and then give you some tips for adapting your blues soloing to fit within the constraints of a cleaner tone.
