http://www.guitarBreakdown.com/ - We close out this 5 part Series of Lessons by looking at Richie Sambora, Larry Carlton, Gary Moore, Allen Hinds and Scott Henderson … they all do cool, unique and expressive things when it comes to bending strings!
So we've made it to the final lesson in this series of lessons. Can't believe 5 weeks has passed by already! Man … this time of year goes quickly.
Well we thought there'd be no better way to end this series then to show a bunch of great examples of using bends in musical ways. Now these examples range from incorporating one or two simple bends to solos that contain a TON of bending.
The first two examples we'll look at are from the great Richie Sambora from Bon Jovi fame. Even if you are not a Bon Jovi fan you can't argue with Richie's soulful bluesy phrasing and touch … which is displayed brilliantly throughout his solo albums.
The first example is a great rhythmic intro to his song "Stranger in This Town". There's only one small bend he incorporates but it makes the riff "pop"
The second example continues exploring this awesome bluesy tune by Mr. Sambora … but this time we look at the first solo in this song. This is one of those examples that contains a TON of bending notes. It comes off as very lyrical and soulful. This is (to me) an amazing solo … anytime you can sing the solo and remember it note for note in your head … means it's a well put together solo.
The third idea we look at is a haunting melody from Gary Moore. It's from his tune "Still Got the Blues". This is another example of … if you can sing it and hum in to yourself … it's a well put together piece of music. This melody is fun to experiment with and just really "feel" the notes!
From there we move onto Larry Carlton. Larry is one of the most recorded guitarists ever! … and for good reason. His tone, touch, phrasing and complete mastery of his instrument have made him a first call session guy for decades. In this example we look at the intro to a solo he played on a live recording of a song called "The B.P. Blues". This solo contains a TON of bending and it really shows off Larry's ability to allow a solo to breath.
And for the final example we take a quick look at a cool little outro solo from Scott Henderson. Scott is pretty much one of those … "everybody's favorite guitar players" … and for good reason. He's incredible command of blues and jazz make for an awesome mix of sounds that will make your ears drool (that's a gross thought). Ha!
In this example from Scott's song called "Tore Down House" we look at how two simple bends in the middle of a cool outro to a song can make all the difference.
Alright … so that's all she wrote! I hope you enjoyed this Lesson series. I had a lot of fun putting it together. I hope you found some of these ideas and concepts fun and useful. Again, the object of all of this is to find an idea you like and explore with it and come up with your own unique ideas.
