The Rickenbacker 4003 bass is famous for its ringing sustain, treble punch and solid underlying bass tones. Since its introduction in 1980 this improved version of the classic 4001 bass has featured a bound fingerboard, mono and stereo output, improved truss rod design, and a slough of modern upgrades. Available only at CME, these nods to the classic instrument inject a dose of CME personality into the 4003 while still maintaining the recognizability and integrity of the famous design.
CME visited the Rickenbacker workshop last year on the hunt for something unique. The resulting basses embody the quality and legacy of Rickenbacker with a true Chicago twist. Inspired by the city’s corresponding train lines (know around town as the “El” train), these vibrant finishes mirror the energy of Chicago’s bustling urban environment.
To celebrate the release of these CME-exclusive 4003 basses, CME has also premiered its second episode of the shop’s collaborative “Gettin’ Out Of The Bassment” video series with Bass Player magazine.
In this installment, Stranger-Najjar takes the basses on a whirlwind tour around Chicago’s famous neighborhoods—and how else to do it but on the similarly colored lines of the Chicago Transit Authority “El” train on which they’re based?
