In this video Nashville guitarist and producer Corey Congilio demos the Martin D-18GE 1934 Golden Era Acoustic Guitar and shows us why it's the smart buy for those chasing down the sound of Martin's perhaps most infamous period of production. Go ahead - call it a "canon". We won't stop you. See our specs below on this monster.
This D-18GE is based on what is quite possibly the best dreadnought ever built. Let's start with the top: It's solid Adirondack spruce, which is known for having a slightly faster response than sitka. An aging toner has been added to the top, giving it a rich color not unlike an older acoustic guitar. The braces are solid Adirondack spruce, and they're arranged in a standard "X" scalloped, forward-shifted pattern in the Golden Era style. This allows the top to vibrate more freely than typical bracing, creating more volume and clarity. The sides and back are genuine mahogany. The neck is a modified V shape, a comfortable profile that'll let you get around without any trouble but also offers plenty of wood to dig into when you need it. Solid black ebony on the fretboard and bridge looks great and adds a stable, precise feel. The dovetail neck joint certainly enhances this guitar's sound as well. Other features include a 1930's belly-style bridge with a long saddle, Waverly nickel tuners with butterbean knobs, and an interior label signed by C.F. Martin IV.
