Two of my greatest inspirations as far as solo guitarists go, are Ralph Towner and Joe Pass. Ralph's recording Solo Concert, and the Virtuoso recordings that Joe did, still resonate with me as a template, a benchmark. Over the course of my career, I've been fortunate to play a lot of "solo" gigs; mostly on a nylon-string guitar. This CD is different than Myth and Feeling, my last solo project, in that I played an archtop acoustic for most of it, with the exception of the Thad Jones classic A Child is Born and the Victor Scherzinger standard Tangerine. The rest were done on an Ibanez archtop. I also recorded and original composition, South of Here. There are two compositions that I "double-tracked"; It Was a Very Good Year, and South of Here, the original. The rest were played "solo". I like compositions that have the weight of a strong melody. And as much as I like the intellectual challenge that modern jazz music affords, I find myself returning to songs that have beautiful melodies. This is what attracted me to Ralph Towner and Joe Pass. I hope that you, the listener, will find as much joy as I did in playing these beautiful compositions. -Mark Lucas
