More classic rock riffs! Leigh Fuge of MusicTeacher.com shows us how to play the iconic intro to the track 'Are You Gonna Go My Way'.
The intro riff from the Lenny Kravitz track Are You Gonna Go My Way is a really fun, killer sounding riff to get under your fingers. Not only does this riff sound great, but it has some great technical challenges to keep you working hard as you dive into it.
The riff is based around the E Minor Pentatonic scale in the open position and starts with a full tone bend on the 2nd fret of the G. There is a lot of tension here, so be sure to support the bend. The bend is done with an up and down motion, so you’re bending it and releasing it. Once released, you pull off to the open G. Getting the flow of this part of the riff is very important.
Then you’re going straight to the 2nd fret of the D string.
Imagine this first part as one phrase. Check out the video to see this slowly.
Then you’re playing the open Low E and the open D, keep this short and stabby, then hit the 2nd on the D before hitting the low E string. I find it useful to palm mute the open Low E to stop it ringing over the D and causing a clash.
The bar ends with another low E note.
The second bar is identical, except you don’t go to the final open Low E, you go to a double stop on the 3rd fret of the B and G string
Take this riff slow, it can be tricky to nail the bending phrase because it is played pretty quick on the record. Get the pitching and the flow right then focus on speed building.
Take care with the string skips and make sure your string muting is tight so that you don’t get any unwanted open strings ringing out.
