This PRS Private Stock Paul's Guitar represents the full realization of Paul Reed Smith's visionary approach to guitar building. One of 50 in a limited run, this instrument has no peers. When we pulled it out to look it over, we hadn't played a note before we were impressed. Every part of this guitar exudes precision and balance. It's more evocative of a high-end, hand-built orchestral instrument than other guitars.
This Private Stock Paul's Guitar has an effortlessly smooth fingerboard feel. The action is very low, but there is zero fret noise because the bridge and nut are cut so well. Mathematically, it's impossible to build a stringed instrument that intonates perfectly, but apparently no one told the Private Stock team. Compare it to any other guitar, and you'll notice a lot of intonation nuances usually get ignored.
The tone is superb, but the Private Stock team is interested in more than just heavenly tone. Like a great musician, this guitar has its own unique and fully realized voice. There is no guitar on the market with a similar tonal profile. You can expect that unmistakable PRS clarity, but with a glowing mid-range that splits the difference between bite and butter. The highs have the stringent yet smooth quality of a good jazz vocalist, and the lows are tight and balanced.
Item Details:
This guitar is one of only 50 Private Stock builds of PRS's new "Paul's Guitar" design. For those of you unfamiliar with PRS, Private Stock guitars are the best instruments they offer. They're hand-built by a phenomenally talented team that works with the master Paul Reed Smith himself.
This instrument features a mahogany body with a Private Stock quilted maple top. It has broad, thick, lush quilt patterns that give the guitar plenty of depth and character. The Copperhead Burst finish is a perfect match for such an exquisite cut of wood. It's a deep copper/orange that really pulls the definition out of the grain, creating an almost 3-dimensional effect. Check out the photos to get an idea.
The fretboard of this guitar is tonally coveted Brazilian rosewood. Quite possibly the best tone wood in the world, this wood is harder and harder to find on new guitars. The Pattern neck is made from Chaltecoco, a rare but tonally distinct wood with a light orange color. For inlays, this axe has brushstroke birds made out of mammoth ivory and 14 karat gold. Good luck finding those on another guitar. Electronically, there are two PRS 408 pickups. A bit narrower than your average humbucker, these pickups are incredibly focused and dynamic, with crisp, vocal-like highs, smooth mids and balanced lows. When you use the two mini-toggle coil taps for each pickup, you'll get absolutely zero volume loss. Yes, really.
