You just heard the burly tones of the brand new MXR M85 Bass Distortion, a collaboration between MXR's Bass Innovations department and indie stompbox designer Ryan Ratajski of Fuzzrocious pedals, a company known for its big-bottomed dirt pedals. Fuzzrocious and MXR started with a classic distortion circuit, famous for its nasty demeanor, and re-worked it with big low end and modern bass tones in mind. Its tones are generated either from silicon clipping diodes, for an aggressive sound with enhanced compression, or LED, for an open, dynamic tone with increased gain. You can switch between them easily with the LED/SIL switch. Among the M85's distinctive features are its separate Wet and Dry controls, which eliminates the need for bass players to split their clean and dirty signals between two amps to keep the low frequencies tight and intact. The pedal's tone control only affects the distorted bass signal, working to tailor the treble frequencies for just the right amount of high end bite. As with all MXR products, the M85 Bass Distortion is made with premium components in Benicia, California, USA.
