Welcome back to Tone Report. Today we’re sending up the Sändare, from Magnetic Effects. The Sändare is designed for players who already love their guitar, amp and surrounding pedals, and gives you a low to medium gain push that sweetens everything on both sides. There are plenty of usable tones to be found throughout the range of the Gain control, with everything available from honey-coated booster to rip-roaring refined overdrive. Rolling the Gain knob down to its minimum unleashes the clean boost circuit, which doubles as a juicy EQ circuit with the Volume knob kept at unity gain. As you roll the Gain control farther up, you start to enter drive territory that has a penchant for superb stackability, making it a key tonal cog at any position in your signal chain, even after delay and reverb pedals. The key to the Sändare’s operation is its internal charge pump circuitry, which takes a mild mannered nine volts and upconverts it to a brawny 18 volts, drastically opening up the pedal by giving you gobs and gobs of rich headroom, as well as the ability to be run in amp’s effects loop. The two-band EQ circuit is active, which means that it boosts frequencies when turned right-of-center and cuts them when turned oppositely. At noon, both bands are flat, letting you shape the drive to match your amp or pickups, and also gives you the ability to change up your pedal combinations by brightening up an inherently dark pedal further down the chain. And just like all Magnetic Effects, the Sändare is hand-built, one at a time, in the UK.
