Gibson’s modern thinline semis are built predominantly in the company’s Memphis facility, just a stone’s throw from the fabled Beale Street. Tonight’s guitar was made in that very factory – a 50th Anniversary 1963 ES-335 in beautiful cherry red. It belongs to Guitar Techniques editor, Neville Marten, who bought it new earlier this year, initially mistaking it from a few paces for a genuine oldie!
Mick was lucky enough to visit the Memphis factory a few months back, where he took some photographs and video that are cut into this piece, to help give you an insight into what happens during the construction of a Gibson semi-acoustic guitar.
In this video Mick is playing the ES-335 through a Victory V40 The Duchess head. The rhythm guitar is straight into the amp; the cleaner bits of lead use a Free The Tone Red Jasper overdrive; the dirtier bits of lead are the Red Jasper plus a Keeley-modded Ibanez TS-808 Tubescreamer, all into the V40. Mick is also playing the bass (also through the V40), while drums are by Terry Bozzio, albeit courtesy of Sonoma Wire Works DrumCore 3 software!
